The Southern Sydney Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service (SSTAAS) is a specialist service of Metro Assist and provides free telephone information, advice and advocacy to tenants in all types of accommodations in the Bankstown, Canterbury, Hurstville, Kogarah, Rockdale and Sutherland local government areas.
One recent success story involves a woman called Annika. She approached SSTAAS because her unit was in poor condition. She used to live with family but relationships had broken down and she was asked to leave. The only place she could find was very run down. It was next to a creek, and when it rained the power would turn off and sometimes her place would flood. Even the stove stopped working.

The Southern Sydney Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service helped by advising Annika of her rights. The landlord has an obligation to keep the premises in a habitable state; she didn’t have to live like this. We told Annika that the landlord had to fix the stove and repair the electricity problems and we could help her negotiate with the landlord.
We helped Annika to make an application to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. There we negotiated a deal to reduce the rent on Annika’s apartment while the landlord repaired the problems that were troubling Annika. With the help of Metro Assist and SSTAAS Annika's unit was fixed.
With the help of Metro Assist Annika’s unit was fixed.
Annika was also referred to our Metro Assist Foodbank Project and to a counsellor from Anglicare who provides an outreach service here at Metro Assist. Annika is receiving counselling which is continuing to help her resolve her family issues.
