International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination Event

Yesterday, Metro Assist Settlement Services collaborated with City of Canterbury Bankstown to hold an International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination event.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination marks the day, in 1960, when 69 unarmed black South African demonstrators, protesting the racist "pass laws", were killed by police officers.
The day "focuses on the urgency of combatting racism and racial discrimination" (United Nations) in order to uphold human rights and freedoms for all people, without discrimination.

Metro Assist was joined by a number of community organisations who participated in panel discussions and information stalls to address racism and racial discrimination, how to respond to witnessing racism, and how to be actively anti-racist in everyday life.

While we celebrate multiculturalism this week, it is important to highlight the urgency of combatting racism and racial discrimination to ensure safety and and wellbeing for all people.
