Metro Assist Statement for the Voice

Metro Assist's Board and staff acknowledge the significance of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and wholeheartedly support the establishment of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, as well as the inclusion of the proposed wording for this initiative in Australia's constitution.

We encourage multicultural communities to seek accurate information and make well-informed decisions during the upcoming referendum on Saturday, October 14th.

We acknowledge the fundamental rights of First Nations people to be consulted as part of the decision-making process in matters relating to them. We wish to see First Nations Peoples empowered and advanced on a path that will close the current gap between the life outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people compared to all other Australians. We believe that First Nations people have a right to justice and self-determination, including the right to provide advice on legislation and policies that impact their own communities through the Voice to Parliament.

Metro Assist is an organisation dedicated to supporting diverse communities. We assist migrant and refugee communities to settle in Australia, where First Nations people have maintained continuous connection to the land, culture, and language for more than 60,000 years. Many migrants and refugees who choose Australia as their home also bring with them a deep spiritual connection to the land, rich cultural and linguistic heritage, and similar value systems. As a multicultural organisation, Metro Assist is committed to fostering connections and social harmony between First Nations people and migrant and refugee communities.

Metro Assist acknowledges that there will be a diversity of views regarding the Voice referendum. We encourage everyone to seek accurate information before having your say during the referendum.
